Adam Back is the inventor of Hash Cash, a predecessor of Bitcoin, which is mentioned in its whitepaper. The Proof-of-Work process of Hash Cash is very similar to the one used for Bitcoin mining. Adam is the co-founder and CEO of Blockstream, a company specialised in sidechains to the Bitcoin blockchain.
